Jaylin E. O'Brien, 18, has been arrested and charged with murder and other offenses following an incident in Sterling that resulted in the death of 18-year-old Alex Omar Cartagena, Jr. on Friday night.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Friday night, deputies from the sheriff's officer were called to the 21000 block of Stanford Square to investigate a reported shooting.
Upon arrival, deputies found Cartagena suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders after they provided aid to the teen.
On Saturday afternoon, the sheriff's office announced that a possible shooter has been arrested, later identified as O'Brien.
“The arrest followed exhaustive efforts by our detectives, deputies, crime scene personnel, and analysts who worked tirelessly to make an arrest in the murder of Alex Omar Cartagena Jr.," Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said. “It’s always tragic to see young lives taken in this way."
O'Brien was arrested on Saturday afternoon and charged with:
Second-degree murder;
- Attempted second-degree murder;
- Two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
He is being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center without bond.
